the places i go....

Today I had an assignment to photograph vineyards of Lake County, Ca.. I forget how lucky I am to see such amazing landscape that the everyday person cannot. I bring back images from assignments that show the landscape of some beautiful private vineyard properties throughout the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Today, in Clear Lake, one of most spectacular geographical views I've seen in wine country will actually be open to the public later this spring (details to come with pictures). The land sits about the Anderson Marsh, with views of snow-capped mountains in the background, as you stand among sprouting vines. Sorry, can't show those pictures to you today, as I have to wait til publication, but here's a teaser! And in newspaper lingo, a teaser is just what it is, its the little picture at the top of the front page that tells you whats inside. So this is my teaser, an outtake.

film festival

I am not a blogger of events of my life, but I"m trying to stay connected by documenting bits and pieces of happenings around me. I wish it were more exciting and really not a reflection of my life, but I'd rather it be a reflection of the people and situations around me. Hopefully this will progress into something more interesting into the new year.

The other night i attended one night of the film noir film festival at the gorgeous Castro Theater, in SF. The two films we saw featured the actor John Garfield, who according to wikipedia, "was especially adept at playing brooding, rebellious, working-class character roles." It couldn't have been written better by me. He was blacklisted during the Communist Scare, and soon died of a heart attack, apparently from the buildup of stress in trying to prove his love and patriotism for America.

The films were full of suspense, comedy, probably due to the era, and in some way truly comical. I wish I had a pen & paper for all the great one-liners.

i'm updating my archive....actually completely redoing but its making me look at images that i overlooked. such as these from an old hasselblad. i stumbled across a quinceanera, not surprising on a saturday morning in Napa, but the family let me photographed them, including the mariachi. I would love to photograph weddings with this camera.

Last night George and I checked a night event at the academy of sciences in San Francisco...an event catered to 20/30-something year olds, featuring drinks & djs, and partially opened museum. Here are some pictures of the exhibits.

Photographed in Cambodia. there's a couple reasons why i love this pictures: the simplicity and the natural desaturated feel of this photograph creates a timeless look - the color of the baskets and the shutters, and the drab concrete colors that nearly reflect similar hues from the old wooden building.

Hyphen Magazine #19 - feature

Get your lastest issue of the volunteer-run Hyphan magazine, which features a story on Asian-American winemakers, such as Kenny Likitprakong, winemaker in Northern California. I spent the early part of the day, with writer Pia Sarkar, photographing Kenny on the first day of harvest.

Some aerial images of the southwest - northern Arizona/southern Utah and the Bay Area. All these times I fly, I don't take out the camera. Our geography appears to be so beautiful despite climate change, and at times, from another planet. The contours, the light, the colors.

a wintry northeast

Its been awhile since i've been in snow and though i don't live with it every winter, i do miss it and the changing seasons. Here are some shots from my canon g-11. It is my first point & shoot, and i don't have much to compare it with other then the great fact that it shoots in raw. I noticed however some noise in slighly underexposed images in the jpgs but havent' yet processed the raw.

Blizzard in the greater Washinton, DC area left us with two feet of snow in 24 hours. DC doesnt' normally get snow, so note the unpaved street here.

 

Three weeks after the blizzard, two inches of snowed dusted DC the morning i left for San Francisco
